ORDINATION REFECTIONS (FATHER’S NOTES: JUNE 6, 2021)
This weekend we had the joy of celebrating the Ordination of two new priests – Fr. Steven DiMassimo and Fr. Tyler Sparrow are now priests of God, ordained for service in the Diocese of Raleigh. This joyful celebration gives the occasion for us to reflect on the role we each have of encouraging young people to discern and follow the call of God in their lives. We all know that there is a need for more priests but, even more than that, there is a broader need for more people inten- tionally discerning and following God’s will in their lives. If that were to happen, vocations to the priesthood and religious life would naturally follow.
It is natural for children to simply follow the path laid out for them by the world – school, college, job, etc. rather than pause and ask the question, “What does God want for me?” It is incumbent on us, their family members, friends, and Church family to help them to consider God’s values and not only earthly ones. What might the world look like if we urged children on to be holy and dedicated to God with as much energy as we encourage them to be healthy and successful? If we paid as much or more attention to their prayers as to their grades and counted time spent with God as every bit as important or more than resumé building opportunities?
Parents, grandparents, family friends, everyone wants what is best for our young people. The ordination of these two new priests reminds us to work for what is truly best for them not only in this world but in the world to come: hearing and following the call of God.

Este fin de semana tuvimos la alegría de celebrar la ordenación de dos nuevos sacerdotes: el P. Steven DiMassimo y el P. Tyler Sparrow son ahora sacerdotes de Dios, ordenados para servir en la Diócesis de Raleigh. Esta alegre celebración nos da la ocasión de reflexionar sobre el papel que tenemos cada uno de animar a los jóvenes a discernir y seguir la llamada de Dios en sus vidas. Todos sabemos que hay una necesidad de más sacerdotes, pero, incluso más que eso, se necesita que más personas disciernan intencionalmente y sigan la voluntad de Dios en sus vidas. Si eso sucediera, naturalmente seguirían las vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida religiosa.
Es natural que los niños simplemente sigan el camino trazado por el mundo: escuela, trabajo, etc. en lugar de hacer una pausa y hacerse la pregunta: "¿Qué quiere Dios para mí?" Nos corre- sponde a nosotros, a sus familiares, amigos y la comunidad de la Iglesia ayudarlos a considerar los valores de Dios y no solo los terrenales. ¿Cómo sería el mundo si animáramos a los niños a ser santos y dedicados a Dios con tanta energía como los animamos a ser saludables y exitosos? ¿Si prestáramos tanta o más atención a sus oraciones como a sus calificaciones y contáramos el tiempo que pasamos con Dios como algo tan importante o más que las oportunidades mundanas?
Padres, abuelos, amigos, todos quieren lo mejor para nuestros jóvenes. La ordenación de estos dos nuevos sacerdotes nos recuerda que debemos trabajar por lo que es verdaderamente me- jor para ellos, no solo en este mundo sino en el venidero: escuchar y seguir el llamado de Dios.
