Hello! My name is Deacon Norberto (Bert) Chavez. I am originally from Colombia, South America, and I came to the United States when I was 5 years old.
I grew up in Massachusetts, moved back to Colombia during my high school years, and then returned to the U.S. My family eventually settled in Florida, where we lived in Ft. Lauderdale for 25 years. I have been married to my beautiful wife, Martha, for nearly 25 years. We moved to Simpsonville, SC, where we have lived for 18 years. We have a wonderful 17-year-old son named Daniel.
During my time in South Carolina, I was ordained as a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Charleston in 2016. I worked as the Director of Business Administration at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville until April of this year.
As Director of Hispanic Ministry, I report to the Pastor and lead the Hispanic Ministries in evangelization, discipleship, faith formation, sacramental preparation, ministry development, worship, and social outreach, including the activities and events associated with these areas.
I love to cook, share my time with others, listen to people, and work with families. My favorite Bible verse is: "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" — Jeremiah 29:11.
