PRISON PEN PAL MINISTRY
PRISON PEN PAL MINISTRY
Description
In this ministry, volunteers provide outreach to inmates in the state prison system
through letter writing. Training and clear guidelines are provided to ensure a meaningful and secure experience.
What We Do:
Through friendly, routine correspondence, we aim to bring encouragement and goodwill to incarcerated individuals. By fostering a supportive relationship, we offer a small light in what can often be a dark and lonely world.
Why It Matters:
Inmates often face loss of freedom and dignity, becoming institutionalized under rigid control. For some, life in prison or even death row is their reality. Your letters can remind them they are not forgotten and that someone cares.
What to Expect:
- You’ll be matched with an inmate at a local correctional institution.
- Write at least one letter per month.
- Commit to at least one year of correspondence (longer is welcome!).
- Cover minor costs for stamps, paper, and envelopes.
- Follow our Do’s and Don’ts to ensure a positive, safe relationship.
Do’s and Don’ts:
- Do treat your pen-pal with dignity and respect.
- Do share general stories and listen with an open heart.
- Do include the inmate’s ID number on all letters.
- Do pray for your pen-pal regularly.
- Don’t discuss legal issues at length or send personal details.
- Don’t send money, stamps, or items unless cleared by ministry leaders.
- Don’t agree to errands or favors outside of prison.
All correspondence is routed through the Parish Office: 804 High House Rd., Cary, NC 27513
