INTRO TO BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The African Ancestry Ministry and Evangelization Network (AAMEN) invites you to join in the celebration of Black History Month February 2021.

The precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926 in the United States. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, felt the need to showcase the talents of Negroes in various fields of science, education, arts, etc. They designated the second week of February as Negro History Week. This week was chosen because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln, February 12th and Fredrick Douglas, February 14th. In the late 1960s, the week evolved into an entire month, thanks in large part to the civil rights movement.

Countries throughout the world also celebrate Black History Month; United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland to name a few.

Each year a theme is provided by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The Black History Month theme for 2021 is: “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity”. Further information about the 2021 and other themes can be found at: https://asalh.org/black-history-themes/
